LB ‘Home Sweet Home’

Written by on September 27, 2021

This week’s Local Eyes is from Auckland-based wordsmith LB, with his new track ‘Home Sweet Home‘ taken from his latest project, STRESS & PROGRESS. Following his 2019 debut project dntBOTZit.KHAN , LB has crafted a 8-track project produced and mixed by friends and close collaborators Nahsafe (Cam Cranston) & Akshay Raju. This compelling journey of Pacific diaspora and identity is told through the poetic cadence, spoken-word delivery and day-in-the-life lens of LB.

Painting a vivid picture of his Auckland surroundings, Polynesian upbringing, and culture over vintage samples and smooth, jazzy production, STRESS & PROGRESS tracks two years worth of trials and tribulations and overcoming, whilst LB always stays true to the roots that raised him.

“I started writing this project after I dropped dntBOTZit.KHAN. in early 2019. I wanted to create a story that articulated my surroundings, whether it be pressures of family, substance abuse, politics, religion to even just tertiary education. I wanted to narrate personal tales that navigate these spaces whilst trying to stay authentic to the Pacific diaspora that I am part of,” LB.

The project arrives alongside a music video for standout single ‘Home Sweet Home’ directed by Darryl Chin, depicting a scrapbook montage of LB’S childhood home and neighbourhood in an ode to Auckland’s North Shore.Of the track, LB says: “The theme of this track is about a sense of belonging. It encapsulates the experience of my household and neighbourhood, from the music that plays from my sister’s room to what my Nana watches on TV and even the ‘sup uce’ and ‘sup toks’ when I leave my driveway. No matter how gritty or emotional some of these realities are, it’s about being proud of where I live and proud of the people that come from these communities.”
