German touring agency getting NZ acts heard in Europe sign as partner to BMG

Written by on February 24, 2013

Making it in New Zealand is one thing, but our country’s biggest groups, such as Fat Freddys Drop and The Blackseeds, realise that the key to their sustained success is finding a way to get their music known overseas. This is where companies such as Berlin based record label & booking agency Crazy Planet Records have come into the picture; and this company’s recent announcement that they have signed a deal as a partner to publishing heavyweight BMG Rights Management has potentially added a large gold (or even platinum) frame to this picture.

Crazy Planet Records has been involved behind the scenes in NZ music for the past 3 years, travelling to our corner of the globe and supporting local groups that they feel could work out over in the European market. This has included releasing a Cornerstone Roots album in Germany, and booking several tours and festival shows for Kiwi acts such as Sola Rosa, Cornerstone Roots, Six60, Funkommunity, Hollie Smith and others. Crazy Planet also has a collaboration with Base FM and an office in Auckland. One of their artists, Mara Simpson, who is now based in Berlin, is arriving in NZ this month to perform a 30 date NZ tour, supported by Crazy Planet, with her band Mara & the Bushkas.

But the companies recent signing with BMG will have NZ music managers and bands even more interested to intercept CEO Matthias Mueller for a coffee when he is next in NZ. BMG Rights Management administer the publishing rights for artists such as David Bowie, Aerosmith, Fleet Foxes, MGMT, Foo Fighters and others of the world’s top artists. Crazy Planet will investigate the NZ music market even more closely with a view to signing exciting artists to an international well-respected publisher. Publishing is becoming a corner stone of the constantly evolving music industry as bands start to generate regular income from syncing to movies, games & TV and from other rights such as airplay or live performance.
