THE LION FOR REAL with Scratch 22

Scratch 22 began DJing at 13 on his dad's old belt drive turntable.

It wasn't to last but before long (but after hours of odd jobs and yard work) he graduated to Technics 1200s.From there he began making his own mix tapes and scratch compositions for kids at school. By the time he left high school, he was a fully fledged turntablist, having competed in the DMC and ITF competitions, sneaking into the clubs and battling DJs twice his age, and making beats for his crew Mass Appeal.

By the time he had turned 22 achievements lay thick on the ground. Diversifying from hip hop, his sets (and production) began to incorporate jazz, psych rock, funk, dance and world music, all with the precision and timing of a hip-hop technician. He plays a mixture of genres allowing the music to fit the right vibe of any party.

He began producing for hip hop luminaries Breakinwreckwordz, soulstress Ladi6 and helped lay some of the groundwork for Shapeshifters multi-platinum 'Solstice' album, as well as taking his own group The Unscene in more adventurous musical directions and landing them a nomination at the b-net's for best hip hop song of '07.

He currently resides in Grey Lynn, Auckland where he has begun production work on his own as-yet-untitled solo album. His radio mix show 'The Lion For Real' (named after a Ginsberg poem) broadcasts Fridays from 12-2 PM on BASE FM 107.3, and his monthly club night THE ARC at the Basement Theatre has managed to hit full capacity every time and is quickly becoming a staple with the downtown crowd. He has produced three summer mixtapes for BASE and an album length Unscene release.

Now 23 and a full time DJ / Producer, Scratch 22 has supported artists such as DJ Krush, Dr Octagon, The Mint Chicks, Shapeshifter and festivals such as Splore, Rhythm & Vines, and Phat08, as well as regular Auckland nightspots Rakinos, Khuja Lounge, Galatos, Fu Bar, Rising Sun and a monthly residency at Suite. He has also recently returned from an international tour with breakinwreckwordz' Tourettes to Australia, Japan, Spain, The Netherlands, England and Scotland.
