As an antithesis to recent events, here's a heartwarming story of the power of music combined with technology to reach out to young people who were previously unable to communicate with the world.
A special needs teacher in New York, Adam Goldberg has harnessed the effect iPad music apps were having on his autistic students by creating an iPad band to help his students create their own original music.
It all started with one student who had previously been mostly non verbal and tended to avoid social interaction, got up in front of the class and sang all of Bob Marley’s One Love after some time using music apps on an iPad.
After Goldberg used the chilled out Brian Eno music app, Bloom to calm another student with severe behavioral issues, the school principal raised enough money to buy 90 iPads.
The school now has an iPad orchestra and say they’re not sure what it is about the devices that special needs students, and particularly autistic students, respond to but believe it is do with the combination of the visual and tactile, and the way the device instantly reacts to inputs.
Most of Goldberg’s students have difficulty communicating, socializing and concentrating. Yet they have been able to play complex music compositions like "Space Circus" by Chick Corea by using technology.
The PS 177 Technology Band has even created an original song called “4-2-4 Jam” which you can download on iTunes for just 99 cents US. All proceeds go back to the school.
